South Berwick Public Library is celebrating the anniversary of Maine’s statehood (1820–2020) by chronicling notable books published over the past 200 years. Historians and booklovers will enjoy reviewing the past through the lens of familiar books that were published over the decades, reflecting on their historical context and our cultural evolution.
From the 1845 memoir “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass” to the 2019 “Testament” by Margaret Atwood, 200 years of popular books is a fascinating look at what becomes a classic and what falls into obscurity.
The Friends of the South Berwick Library selected the titles and member Karen Benoit compiled them with a description of our country’s way of life and values during each period. Marshwood High School students Olivia Kilmer and Evan Colman created the webpage.
